Recently the Cover magazine has just introduced about Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh. The editor of The Cover is Assistant Profession Vikas Singh, the head of department of Marwari college, Ph.D in Buddhist Philosophy Trustee at Amblinking Foundation, M.Phil in Indian Language, MA in Sanskrit, MA in Translation Studies, Certificate of Proficiency in Pali. I am honor to post the whole article.

Master Thinley Nguyen Thanh: Buddhist Vajra Guru from Vietnam and Director of Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications

Each drop of coffee gently fell into the cup and created soft rhythms that accompanied the stories Guru told us about when the Buddha was still alive. Just listening to Guru’s teaching in the “Dharma Hall” at the cafe cutely named “Heart,” I knew Guru’s followers in Hanoi felt so blessed to meet the living Guru in a dharma atmosphere after his long travel by car of more than 5,000 km from Tantra House.

The Guru stopped teaching for a while, and I reflected on the profound meaning of his teachings when Mat Nhuan Quang suddenly told Guru:

– Dear Guru, we are so grateful to you for your effort on travelling the long-distance trip regardless of the distance, your age to the North of Vietnam to give us teachings. I have learned that although the distance is long, it is not as long as the period you have been spreading the Dharma from the beginning of hardness to the day when Song Nguyen Tantra House becomes glorious.

He kept silent, and his eyes looked into infinite space. I saw his gaze and visualised images of the “very early days” appearing gradually but clearly like a slow-motion movie. I have followed him for more than seven years, and I cannot understand all difficulties and arduousness he has experienced. Still, I can understand the heroic life of the adventurous Guru partly for Pure Mind Yoga.

The adventurous Guru partly for Pure Mind Yoga.

He left his hometown of Da Nang in 1996 to start a new life in the South. As a lover and admirer of Buddhism since childhood, He always spent much time learning about the path of Liberation. Before going to the South, he was equipped with a little Buddhist knowledge from a monk in a cave in Ngu Hanh Son Mountain, now in Son Tra District, Da Nang City.

After three years of struggling through difficult times in Ho Chi Minh City as a journalist, Guru was given a book The Buddha and His Teachings by a monk named Thich Giac Quang, who is now the abbot of Quan Am Monastery in Bien Hoa. From this book, Guru developed a very new perspective on Buddhism according to the base of the dialectical science that the Buddha pointed out over 2,000 years ago. Therefore, he realised The Path, and he has been continuously making research, survey, practice, and application for ten years.

In 2006, due to favourable conditions and his deep roots of virtues in previous lives, Guru awakened the path of Liberation, enlightened by the light of the Buddha. He decided to leave the bustling place where he was supposed to be the Pearl of the Far East when he was an official reporter of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Police Newspaper. He went to a village now known as Phuoc Thanh, Tan Hoa commune, Phu My town, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. This place is extraordinary, located next to the foot of the mountain with the pure atmosphere, filled with green trees all year round, flowers blooming, and fruits ripening in the area of Dinh Mountain that Guru had discovered during a writing business trip. He bought 1,000 square meters of land and built a small house to purify his Mind by practising Buddhism. In the early days of difficulties, he never stopped the aspiring wish to liberate from Samsara.

From 2006 to 2011, Guru wrote more than 500 articles like the way to practise making offerings to the Three Jewels. In these early days, for two consecutive years, Guru ate sweet potatoes daily. It is a vegetable with many nutrients and is easy to grow. He had no money; all the savings he accumulated during his time working as a journalist for the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Police Newspaper was spent buying the land and building a small and straightforward Tantra House. During that difficult time, he remained enthusiastic with the teachings and stayed dedicated to the study of Vajrayana. And the “Buddha-nature” in him was realised by the great works of Padmasambhava “Dakini’s Teachings.” Thanks to the deity’s blessings and “Dakini” support, Guru was the first to write about Vajrayana in Vietnam. He wrote the famous book “One life, One mantra” published in 2009. This book has been posted on many websites, including https://thuvienhoasen.org/. With enthusiasm to share the spiritual experiences he had been diligent in researching and practising, Guru continued writing a book “Dharma is life from the perspectives of Tantra”, and the book was well-received by many readers when it was released.

“One life, One mantra”

“Dharma is life from the perspectives of Tantra”

From 2012 to 2013, Guru understood the suffering of all sentient beings in the Sahaja world and sympathised with the devout Buddhists who were “struggling to find the path” in the matrix of evil teachers and evil powers. Guru wanted to share the pure taste of Liberation and the pure sweetness of true happiness with all sentient beings through his Bodhicitta. Guru made vows in front of Avalokitesvara that he would follow the path of the Bodhisattva. He was ready to bear the disadvantages and obstacles for his own so that all beings can enjoy the sweet taste of the Dharma. He said:

I am Nguyen Thanh, Buddha’s Disciple, who understand the full meaning of “Shame for self and shame for others” in the Dharmapada Sutra and being a Good Knowing Advisor in Buddhism of Song Nguyen’s Bodhimandala, I take vows in front of Buddha, Padmasambhava, Vajra Dharma Guardian as below:

  1. Based on the supernatural power of Buddha, Padmasambhava, Dakini to put all the mind-power into every one of my lectures, I vow for any disciples of Song Nguyen’s Bodhimandala will be created favourable conditions to read articles on chanhtuduy.com to connect their Mind with their Guru’s, Buddhist’s Saints and Sages. Their powers which come from Enlightenment will increase day by day, and their intellectual insight will be more clear-sighted, their affairs will be flowing smoothly.
  2. I will bear all the offences which were arisen by the laziness of those who being disciples of Song Nguyen’s Bodhimandala (no matter they are inners or not). I will also receive all the outcomes that are going to correspondingly happen based on the law of causation which was the result of my not having enough enlightening power to improve the interest and surrender in Dharma on them.
  3. I vow that every people who had a natural bond to come across and read one or many of my articles on chanhtuduy.com will be gardened merits and virtues for the future to be a Tibetan Buddhist, from now to the supreme Enlightenment.

Although Guru started the spreading the Dharma with a lot of difficulties and he is always busy with writing many coffee-favoured articles in the early mornings, and organising Dharma workshops, Dharma meetings, and Dharma conferences yearly. So that all followers have the favourable opportunity to meet Guru and accumulate merit, wisdom, and growth day by day in the light of Guru’s wisdom and Bodhicitta.

It can be said that there has never been any place in Vietnam that can organise so many Dharma conferences and Dharma meetings annually like Song Nguyen Tantra House. The size of the conferences and meetings has been expanded year by year. The place for conferences and meetings are more and more luxurious and modern. The participants are both domestic and international. Through each Dharma conference and meeting held by Guru, learners and disciples receive more chances to be close to Guru and live in the six harmonies in Tantra House’s Sangha community and enjoy the spirit of “worldly pleasure hand in hand with Dharma enjoyment.” The content of the conferences and meetings are prepared well and checked carefully by Guru himself, and it reflects development and professionalism in compliance with modern time.

In 2014, Guru completed the guidance and curriculum of practising the Dharma that has been applied at Song Nguyen Tantra House nationwide and worldwide. During the time of performing Bodhicitta’s actions, he still worked hard and wrote numerous articles. In 2016 alone he wrote 1,000 articles, and each article contains 2,000 words or more. Also, in 2016, he completed the curriculum correctly and revealed six marvellous spiritual innovations after more than 20 years of surveying, research, application, practice and achievement. Since October 2016, these findings have been continuously posted on Chanhtuduy.com and have brought many benefits for all sentient beings. These spiritual innovations are welcomed and appreciated by scholars and actual practitioners. No one has ever rejected and argued the base of the dialectical science of these six spiritual findings.

By March 2018, Song Nguyen Tantra House defended successfully the project of establishing Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications (ITA Institute) with the scientific council in Hanoi and was licensed to do research and science from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Since then, Thanh Tri (Pure Mind) Yoga has appeared as a new school based on Vajrayana’s foundation, and the essence of Buddha’s teachings united in harmony with nationality, age and country.

Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Res

earch and Yoga Applications was established under the decision No.199/LHHVN dated March 5 2018.

Functions and Tasks

The Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications is a science and technology organisation the operates under the Law on Science and Technology 2013, Decree No. 08/2014/NĐ-CP dated January 27, 2014, of the Government regulating in detail and guiding the implementation of some articles of the Law on Science and Technology, Circular No.03/2014/TT-BKHCN dated March 31, 2014, of the Ministry of Science and Technology guiding requirements on the establishment and registration for the operation of science and technology organisations, representative office and branch of science and technology organisation.

The Institute has its legal status, seal, and bank account and is financially self-sustaining. The Institute headquarter is based in Hanoi. It is permitted to open branches or representative offices nationwide if necessary under the prevailing law and regulations of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations.

The Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications has functions and tasks as follows:

– To gather scientists, experts and those who are experienced in research and management to implement activities on development research, science and technology services on psychology and Yoga to exploit intellectual resource and improve the health and spiritual life of people.

– To conduct scientific researches on psychology and Yoga to exploit intellectual resource: theoretical basis and facts on educational psychology, gender psychology, social psychology, age-related psychology, and psychology on business and administration.

– Services: Based on research results of psychology and Yoga, assist with consultancy, counter-argument, training, seminar organisation and popularisation of relevant knowledge that is useful for working and learning as well as improving the health and spiritual life of people.

– To combine and coordinate with organisations and individuals inside and outside the country to hold seminars and conferences and other activities as per the Institute’s functions and tasks.

The theoretical background of Thanh Tri Yoga is Buddhist Logic, Philosophy and Epistemology which shares similarity with and expands on positive psychology because the doctrinal system of Buddhism is the science of the human Mind and profoundly examines the activity of the brain.

So what does “Thanh Tri” mean? Thanh Tri in “Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications” refers to the name of a science organisation like our Song Nguyen Tantra House. “Thanh Tri Yoga” is a dialectical spiritual science based on the Buddha’s wisdom. “Thanh Tri” should be perceived as the goal of this Yoga which aims at Pure Mind and Discernment.

Pure Mind means the Mind that is free from eight worldly concerns: fame-disrepute, praise-blame, gain-loss, and pleasure-pain). Those who have not passed beyond these eight preoccupations are seen not to have a pure mind. Buddhist practitioners strive to think and do well, but their ultimate goal is to obtain Pure Mind, which is neither good nor bad. It is called the Mind of Bodhicitta.

Discernment means mindfulness and profound understanding of the nature of all phenomena.

So “Pure Mind and Discernment” is skilful means to attain the ultimate end of Buddhist practitioners in general and Pure Mind Yoga in particular. The word “Pure” in Sanskrit is “Sangha,” and can be both noun and adjective, which accordingly refers to Buddhist practitioners. Therefore, the quality of a Buddhist practitioner should be examined based on his natural purity, which can be considered a dialectical spiritual criterion.

Song Nguyen Tantra House has taken a brilliant new step in the administrative scale and academic scale with ITA Institute. Song Nguyen Tantra House previously joined hands to contribute to the development of education, science and culture of Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations with the role of Unesco Club for Research and Applications of Pure Mind Yoga. The articles on chanhtuduy.com translated into many languages such as English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and Swedish have been giving off their fragrance in the garden of Dharma flowers. From Vimalakirti’s castle – chanhtuduy.com, the Dharma scent has been spreading every direction, no longer limited in S-shaped land of Vietnam but reaching other countries all over the world. The number of international students has increased every day. The English articles written by foreign learners across the globe are regularly posted on the home page of ITA Institute, marking the significant development of Song Nguyen Tantra House as the Guru’s words in the conference in early spring 2015 state:

“In spring permeate the fragrance of Dharma flowers

Through every direction, Bodhichitta spreads far and wide

Song Nguyen Tantra House sets sail

Across the ocean of Dharma to the land of true eternity”.

Recognising the need for teaching and encouraging the foreign learners, Song Nguyen Tantra House under Guru’s guidance successfully organised the international conference in 2018. The swallows are relying on the light of Guru’s wisdom and compassion to flap their wings cross the ocean from Sri Lanka, Dubai, and India to Vietnam to enjoy the Dharma spring in the meaningful conference filled with the divine relationship of Guru-disciple in Song Nguyen Tantra House. The two abbots from Sri Lanka, Professor Avinash Kumar Srivastava a graphic designer from India, and the principal of a high school, Sonia Kohli from Dubai were so moved with emotion and happiness when they first met the Guru whom they had been studying from for over two years.

In 2019, Song Nguyen Tantra House took more steps when Guru created more opportunities of spreading the Dharma in the future and made the new wind in the popularisation of Pure Mind Yoga. Guru decided to expand Song Nguyen Tantra House with 2,000 square meters by building 16 luxurious, modern spiritual works imbued with the blessings of the Three Jewels. Spiritual constructions with unique architecture were designed and constructed by Guru who was dedicated to “renounce the finance for developing the Dharma.” All learners and disciples can experience “the 5-star spiritual resort”, which many foreign followers have described as “the Pure Land in Samsara” and namely Tantra Nirvadeva, an 81-year-old doctor. He made the physical checkup for more than 5,000 lamas. In his following prayer poem, he shares the blessings of a Buddhist and practitioner following the footsteps of a Pure Mind Guru who wholeheartedly scarifies his life for the ultimate Liberation of sentient beings.

In 2020, Song Nguyen Tantra House, under the Guru’s guidance, successfully organised the International Conference “Opening the spring of Mind” with the presence of international students (from the USA, India, Singapore, etc.) at Song Nguyen Tantra House and included remote participation of ITA members in New Zealand, Korea, Canada, and the USA. The conference activities were broadcasted online from spiritual works such as Lien Hoa Dai (Lotus Platform), Phap Van Duong (Dharma Cloud Hall), Loc Uyen garden (Sarnath), etc. These are skilful and special means that the Guru has mercifully created for all learners and disciple to accumulate merits and develop wisdom.

Also in 2020, Song Nguyen Tantra House successfully defended its scientific research “The Psychological Effect of Pure Mind Yoga on Stress and Depression.” The research clarified the therapy and effectiveness of Pure Mind Yoga on the treatment of depression. These are the science-based and practical benefits of Pure Mind Yoga. Therefore, the Copyright Office of Vietnam certificated the copyright for the research on “The Psychological Effect of Pure Mind Yoga on Stress and Depression.” Through the dissemination of the effects of this therapy, many patients with depression can recover from this global illness, and other beings can gain many other benefits from Pure Mind Yoga as detailed in the research.

In addition to this scientific research, Song Nguyen Tantra House has also obtained certificates for the copyright of spiritual works such as “About the Realm of Demons”, “Elements and the Spiritual Aspects”, “Right Buddhist Teachings, Wrong Method of Dharma Practice,” and “Contemplation on Fourteen Grievous Failures of a Buddhist Practitioner” to assure means to help more sentient beings through access to Dharma for their Liberation in the future.

Guru himself has written 2,315 articles, including 10 in English and seven on the long-distance trip from Tantra House to Northern Vietnam. Additionally, Guru gave fruitful sermons in Hanoi and Hai Phong. So far in 2020, he travelled more than 10,000 km to meet and teach the followers from the South to the North, writing many articles, giving lectures, and teaching.

2020 has been a turbulent year impacting everyone in Vietnam and other countries around the world. Amid that impermanent “storm”, Guru of Pure Mind Yoga with his dedication for the Dharma drove “his thousand-mile shoes” on his Dharma trip from Tantra House to the North. Every place Guru stopped became “the Dharma Hall,” every event, every people he met in his Dharma trip was his self-example lessons of “Dharma is life and life is Dharma” for the learners and disciples to follow and understand more the practical aspects about the right view, right thought, repaying the Four Great Debts, and seven treasures of a Buddhist. The image of the compassionate Guru selecting every bunch of grapes to give the followers, the meaningful lessons through the pair of sandals, or the Buddha’s statues always remind us to practice Dharma diligently, and Guru Devotion for a quick back to the city of liberation. Most unique and impressive is that Guru taught these lessons in English. Seven English articles were posted on chanhtuduy.com while Guru was on his dharma trip, which made all learners highly appreciative and impressed. Even native speakers were interested in reading Guru’s English articles.

Guru’s activities to uphold the Dharma not only take place in Vietnam but also occur in foreign countries during his long trip. Thereby, the learners and disciples understand more about Guru’s Bodhicitta upon all sentient beings with no discrimination. I wonder if any place in this country of Vietnam that has not printed by his car and footsteps.

Understanding the sufferings of sentient beings in the most prosperous places in the world, such as in Europe, America, etc., even at the age of sixty, Guru has still diligently studied English to help beings in foreign countries have more opportunities to access to the benefits of Pure Mind Yoga. That Kalyanamitra bravely travelled alone to the European countries where followers are practising Pure Mind Yoga in Latvia, France and Sweden. Although Guru made the dharma trip alone, he always gave the meaningful Dharma gift to all followers and beings.

The followers in Song Nguyen Tantra House certainly remember Guru’s heartfelt teachings through the articles written while abroad to guide all beings to freedom from Samsaric sufferings.

Even though Guru was standing in the cold in a strange land, his Bodhi warmth still spread to his learners through the teachings:

“Cold land, strange people, crumpled space

Arc de Triomphe is merely the victory in Samsara

French or Vietnamese makes no difference

Bodhicitta is the crown prince to come”.

While we listen to Guru’s words, Song Nguyen Tantra House has completed the Dharma practise, equipped itself with modern facilities, made the completion of administration, academic and personnel aspects for Guru’s Dharma trip around the world in the coming days.

“We should go now; my teaching is about to start,” said Guru.

We follow Guru to the car parking. The gentle sunlight is scattering on the blooming flowers, streaming through the green leaves, promising a successful lecture tonight.

I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru for upholding the Dharma.

May the torch of wisdom shine everywhere.

May Pure Mind Dharma spread the pure fragrance of awakening.

May all beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s Nature.

May COVID 19 pandemic come to an end soon.

    Dear Guru

May I praise for the article posted in Cover Magazine headed by Ass.Prof. Dr. Vikas Singh, which covers the cause of Dharma propagation of Guru over the past 25 years. Many…many difficulties and obstacles may have not been listed in here but this article has partly helped the reader imagine the up and down in your cultivation life. None of the path of success is covered with roses. From early history, Guru with empty hand had left the busy city to live a secluded life in Dinh Mountain, cleaning the wild grass by himself and pit the foundation for the Lotus Platform and Pure Wind House; many times staying up late to write counter arguments against evil monks and power; long-day Dharma trips in the heat of the sun and winds of storm to bring the light of Buddha Dharma to the sentient beings; days of incurring freezing cold weather in western countries with only flame of Bodhicitta to warm up yourself and the sentient beings, … and now accordingly is the formation of a splendorous Song Nguyen Tantra House with modern infrastructure and an increasing number of readers. And today, I am touched and proud to read an article introducing you and Song Nguyen Tantra House in this Magazine which comes from the cradle of Buddhism, India.
“In spring permeate the fragrance of Dharma flower
Through every direction, Bodhicitta spreads far and wide
Song Nguyen Tantra House sets sail
Across the ocean of Dharma to the land of true eternity.”

I rejoice the merit and virtue of the writer and the sharing of the article by Tantra Dharma Bodhisita. May all sentient beings have a chance to read it to understand more about Guru with your wisdom and Bodhicitta, then follow your step on the path of liberation.

May Guru live long for the sake of all sentient beings
May all sentient beings be surrounded with the blessings of the Trinity
    May Covid-19 pandemic end soon

I bow my head on your lotus feet
I went through the meticulously written article by a young disciple from India, who has depicted the multifaceted aspect of our holy Guru and the dynamic activities of Pure Mind Buddhism under his profound spiritual vision. It is a great pleasure that he has put in strenuous effort not only in collecting the materials from different articles of shared by our Guru but also interpreted and explained Guru’s sermon delivered at different places with accurate meaning and import. But the greatest pleasure lies in the fact that it has found a profound expression in a popular magazine of India. I feel elevated and express my immense pleasure on this occasion of jubilation for the efforts of our Guru touching touching a new horizon. I am thankful to the young disciple for his vigorous efforts, enthusiasm and zeal of providing a new vista to our Gurus spiritual venture.

Whatsoever living beings there be : – feeble or strong, long ,stout or medium , short, small or large , seen or unseen, those dwelling far or near , those who are born and those who are to be born – may all beings, without exception, be happy minded.
May all sentient being be happy and free of Corona virus.

I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guru.
I am highly delighted to read the detailed and fascinating life sketch of the second living Buddha, namely Guru of Song Nguyen Tantra House of Vietnam, Thinley Nguyen Thanh in The Cover Magazine of India !
Does it need any other evidences other than this to show how Guruji’s
Name and fame throughout the globe as fast as Covid-19 !
Unlike Covid-19 pandemic,Guruji’s name and fame is not of destruction but for his construction of monumental moral ethics of philosophy of Buddha’s Nature by his virtuous qualities and Dharma practices with the motto ” Love all and Serve all with bodhicitta ” !
Drawing the attention towards my humble prayer poem which is mentioned in this article,I obediently wish to say that it is only a drop of nectre from a fragrant flower that I offered to my Guru during my prayer with overwhelming joy and devotion oozing like a fountain from the bottom of my heart !
Like many many strokes falling on an ordinary stone block by a skilled sculptor makes an Avalokitheshwara Statue which enjoyes the status of a Diety worthy of worship, many adversities and crucial moments in the life of our Guruji’s have shaped him and elevated him to the present status of ‘ Modern living second Buddha ‘ of the present century with his continuous struggle and efforts and firm holding to Buddhism in his own unique way,not crossing the orbit of Dharma at any time.!
May his dream of ” Sarve Janaha Sukhino Bhavanthu ” come true and fruitful.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Dear Guru,
This article is interesting because it tells the history of the history of Guru, and Song Nguyen Tantra House. I remember reading the articles the author writes about, especially the ones Guru wrote while he was traveling. Buddhist practice is a good way to cope with depression and I am glad that Guru can shed light on those of us who experience that disorder. Thank you Guru for your wisdom and teachings and thank you to the author of this article.

  14. Tantra Midhita says:

    Dear Guru,

Much compassion, I am enthralled. I have only been following Guru for short while, and while I knew Guru was indeed accomplished, I had no idea the breadth of the endeavors made. I hope someday to be an astute student, able to pick up on the nuance of Guru, but I know that any worthwhile endeavor, like Guru’s, takes time, patience, dedication. Thank you for setting up ChanhTuDuy, for the readers afar. It has been making a difference in my life. Now that I have heard how strong Guru is mentally, I must endeavor harder.

    Thank you Guru.
    May Guru continue to thrive.
    May all beings find enlightenment.

Dear Guru, More than thousands people search this beautiful article on our webportal. Guru, you gave a vision to all of us disciples that only practice Dharma without right view can’t speak the right speech, and without right speech, you speak all day, but it is a group of conversations each other or isn’t worth anything. We have to give up this habit only to talk about Dharma. We have to practice under a Guru like you who has a great understanding of the right view.

I thanks to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Nga, Head, Department of Science and Technology, Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications, Vietnam for writing this beautiful article. And last we share our merits with all of our Dhamma follower.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

    With Metta and regards
