Letter No. 264 to disciples: WHY IS THE DOG MEAT PROHIBITED FOR BUDDHIST PRACTITIONERS TO EAT? (Không được ăn thịt chó vì sao?)

Letter No. 264 to disciples: Why is the dog meat prohibited for Buddhist practitioners to eat?

Dear disciples,

You have already listened to my conveying the Buddha’s teachings on three kinds of pure meat but Buddha forbid nine kinds of flesh: that of (1) human beings, (2) lions, (3) tigers, (4) leopards, (5) dogs, (6) snakes, (9) tortoises. (8) hyenas and (9) horses. Why is it so? According to the explanation from Venerable Ajahn Bramavamso in an article” “What the Buddha Said About Eating Meat”, an extract is: “however there are some meats which are specifically prohibited for monks to eat: human meat, for obvious reasons; meat from elephants and horses as these were then considered royal animals; dog meat – as this was considered by ordinary people to be disgusting; and meat from snakes, lions, tigers, panthers, bears and hyenas – because one who had just eaten the flesh of such dangerous jungle animals was thought to give forth such a smell as to draw forth revenge from the same species.”

Dear disciples,

There rises the question in which why the flesh of cows, buffaloes, sheep, chickens and goats is not prohibited to eat? Did the Buddha make a distinction between all beings, which is contrary to his great compassion with no discrimination? No, of course not! With Dharma-eye which is able to penetrate all things and see clearly or purely the truth, the Buddha forbidding the nine kinds of flesh and making the rules not to consume such nice kinds of flesh, really involves more than simply cultural tradition, political norms or the safety for life from the dangerous jungle animals; the main reason is that the Buddha penetrated all potential harmfulness hidden in such nice kinds of flesh. The Buddha found out that the nine types of meat contained more poison of anger within, especially when they were beaten, abused to death, or brutally killed by stabbing, smashing, burning and drowning; the poison of “anger” becomes more “dense” and “heavy smell”.

So biologically, the dangerous toxin emitting from their “anger” will cause many pathogens to human beings; generating the biological magnetic field which harms to those who directly kill them and to those who indirectly eat their meat. This argument is accordance with the Buddhist perspective of that takes compassion as the core of virtue. From Buddhist perspectives, the Buddha always upholds the doctrine of eradicating greed, anger and ignorance called the three poisons which severely affect the liberating path. So the prohibition of eating nice kinds of flesh including dogs is the Buddha’s intellectual aspect for the success of the Buddhist practitioners.

From a Tantrayana Buddhist perspective, the poison of anger causes the blockage from one or more than one among 72,000 meridians in the human body; the poison of anger also hinders the energy flow through the body, so the mind is difficult to clear. And these 9 types of flesh are harmful to the human body, energy flow and mind of Buddhist practitioners. Non-Buddhists do not know the harmful effect of these 9 types of meat so their followers of other religions still eat dog flesh. From this reference, the practitioners in non-Buddhism are difficult to get spiritual results, let alone the holy fruits of enlightenment.

Dear disciples,

Until very recently, in Vietnam, we have raised the movement not to eat dog meat due to the recommendations of the Association for the Protection of Animals and Pets. I am happy that Nhat Tan village where was famous for dog meat is now nowhere to see the fired heads of dogs; the slaughterhouses are gradually reduced, but there are still dog meat restaurants operating. The owners of slaughter houses such as Mr. Phuong in Dong Phuong Yen, Mr Dat and Mr. Dai in Trung Hoa, Chuong My district, Hanoi left this harmful job and find another work to do, although they got much money from killing dogs and selling dog meat to build the big and beautiful house. The external causes such as being bitten by dogs, falling into the pot of boiling water, death by falling head on stone and so on make them fearful. But in fact, these fears are somehow from the “spiritual” worries which makes many slaughter owners, dog meat sellers leave their job or gradually quit this job.

Dear disciples,

Recently, on 10/09/2018, Hanoi People’s Committee issued a warning to people not to use dog meat, to abandon this habit in order to enhance the beautiful image of the capital in the eyes of foreign visitors. For Buddhist followers, eating dog meat is a violation of the Buddhist precepts, especially for those who are walking on the path to liberation; they should stay away from these 9 types of flesh in order to improve the effectiveness of meditation. For the members, learners and disciples in Song Nguyen Tantra House, I did warned you for a long time that you should not eat the flesh of dogs or cats so that our spiritual progress is more advanced in accordance with the dialectical science and keeping the pure devotion towards  Guru.

To conclude, I asserted that those who kill dogs or cats on slaughterhouses and those who regularly consume dog flesh will suffer the heavy consequences on body, speech and mind. I pray for those who are still slaughtering dogs and cats, they quickly find the opportunity to quit the job. I pray for all dogs, cats and other animals that the Buddha prohibited to eat, if being killed, they will be reborn in the high realms. Om Mani Padme Hum.

A raining afternoon on the peak of Phu Van mountain.
