Letter from New Zealand: Knox Home come back day

On one of the last days of October, I surprisingly received the email from Titia, the coordinator of Elizabeth Knox Home and Hospital, welcoming us to come back with our Pure Mind Yoga sessions for the seniors after the second lockdown in New Zealand due to the Covid-19.

Morena Kim and Andy,

It’s so lovely hearing from you guys! I am doing good, thank you for your nice words. How have you guys been?

I’ve got some good news! Starting next weekend you are more than welcome to come in to do your fabulous Yoga class again. Could we make it 3pm though? This way it doesn’t overlap with any other activities and residents won’t miss out.

There are some changes with regards to health and safety, which mainly means that you’ll both need to wear a mask at all times.

Thanks,

Titia Schamhart

Yoga Session is set on the weekly schedule of Knox officially

In the previous catch-up email, she shared that “the residents have been asking about the food-yoga-meditation thing a lot”. I understand that Titia cherishes our help for the residents with Pure Mind Yoga, a very new and unique kind of Yoga that she has never known about. Our yoga Session also has been set on the weekly schedule of Knox officially since July 2020.

Then the day comes. On Saturday afternoon, we are back to Knox after more than two months. Everything is just the same except for staff and volunteers needed to keep wearing their masks at all time regards to health and safety. As usual, Titia is full of energy in her work, gathering interested learners to join the class. The old “students” are glad to see us and eager coming along to start the session. We have two new faces in our class today, Collin and Xero. We made a team of nine enjoying our Pure Mind Yoga activities for about an hour.

Sarah and Ponny are such active students. When I raise the piece of paper with the sentence for the yoga exercises, they read it aloud excitingly just so childlike. They have been playing a part of refreshing the class and attending very regularly. We are so pleased to have them with the team.

After introducing the two Yoga exercises in eating and drinking for the new participants as well as reviewing them for the old ones, we practise together with fruits that we have prepared for them. There are bananas, avocadoes and some mandarines. Everyone all enjoyed those fruits and then drank water while practising drinking exercise. Xero, the new-comer, like other members, says that he enjoys this kind of Yoga in eating and drinking activities while having fun with each other.

Fruits and chocolate cakes

We then continue with the two exercises for going to sleep and when waking up.  For every exercise, either brother Cao Dieu Mat Hai or me act out and demonstrate by a photo with the scripts below. When I bring the image in front of the student (so that they can see it clearly), they all love to read it out loud one by one. Thus, everyone all has the chance to learn the sentences for each activity repeatedly.

The most exciting part is the puzzle time after we finished four exercises. We introduce the puzzle to them to play by matching the right answer for the activity that they chose. The prize is a piece of chocolate cake and a small colourful paper crane just for keepsake. That might be the tiniest “prize” in the world, but everyone seems to desire it. Eventually, all of them completed the puzzle only in the first or second attempt and enjoyed the chocolate cake together. Of course, we didn’t forget to think: “May everyone have meditation food” when eating.

At the end of the session, Titia expressed her gratitude to us for helping the seniors with Pure Mind Yoga activities. Her appreciation and encouragement are inspiring to us. She said: “Please don’t expect them to remember your yoga lessons and practice on their own. The point is the time they spend and experience Yoga activities with you. You guys really have helped them out with such new, exciting experience and they enjoyed their time with you. That’s value to them.”

Her idea reminds me of Guru’s teaching that, when practising Bodhicitta, it’s your efforts counted, not the outcomes (success or failure). Don’t let the results extinguish your Bodhicitta fire. We bear the lively example of Guru in mind to keep companioning with the seniors at Elizabeth Knox home, to help them the chance of enjoying Pure Mind Yoga as well as receiving Bodhicitta seeds through compassionate Guru’s channel.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May Guru have good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to an end soon.

May our country overcome the natural calamity at soonest.

    Dear holy Guru,
Thank you so much for sharing this letter written to you. It brought a smile to my face. What an amazing different or yoga is making for these elders who could easily fall into desperation and suffering. Reading their minds and hearts with these wonderful lessons and their excitement over learning them is amazing. I’m so happy to hear the ways yoga can be shared with everyone. A step closer to eliminating suffering for all sentient beings and a step closer to achievement of enlightenment to all. Om Mani padme hum. May you live long and well for the sake of all sentient beings. May Cao Diue Mat Hai and Cao Dieu Mat Thuy continue sharing these lessons and may the residents continue to grow and thrive in yoga.

    Dear Holy Guru,

I’m delighted to read this article by dharma brother Cao Dieu Mat Hai and Cao Dieu Mat Thuy. I’m happy to hear that the seniors at Elizabeth Knox Home and Hospital enjoyed their Yoga session and got to feel the benefit of Pure Mind Yoga.

The important message that I learnt in story is that (1) when practising Bodhicitta, it’s your efforts counted, not the outcomes (success or failure) and (2) don’t let the results extinguish your Bodhicitta fire. I’ll keep this story as an inspiration for me to continue helping others to walk on the Buddha’s path.

May dharma brother Cao Dieu Mat Hai and Cao Dieu Mat Thuy achieve all rightful wishes. May everyone have meditation food.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Dear Vajra Brothers Cao Dieu Mat Hai and Cao Dieu Mat Thuy!
I’m happy to read your article. I felt that the simplicity, easy to remember, easy to practice and also very fun of Yoga sessions attracted the participants.
Through your article, I understand that when practising Bodhicitta, it’s your efforts counted, not the outcomes (success or failure). Don’t let the results extinguish your Bodhicitta fire. That is the meaningful teaching of Guru. I happily praise the work of the two of you following the example of Guru.
Thank you for writing a beneficial article.

May the Covid 19 Pandemic will be soon over.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

That’s a wonderful thing to do. Every care home should be like this so patients could be free of negativity in the old age. May all sentient beings realize their true nature.
    Thank you

    Dear compassionate guru,

Thank you so much for sharing this letter with us, i really admired it, and also I’d like to tell you that I watched a video on YouTube about the vietnamese Yoga, after I knew that you teach some students Yoga, but your Yoga isn’t depending on the body postures only like the Indian Yoga, I liked the video so much, but I didn’t complete it, because I know that, you teach every student with a different way, everyone based on his case, so I didn’t complete, because I don’t know if that’s suitable for me or not. I know that the only suitable thing for me so far is to read and comment on chantuduy.com until I come to you, thank you so much again dear honorable guru,

I bow my head down for you
I express my gratitude to you
    I devote myself to you

May you have a good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings
May all the sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature
May the pandemic caused by corona virus soon end
    Om Mani padame hum

I am glad that you have actually earnt the core meaning of Pure Mind Yoga through diligent reading and commenting, as well as your pure Guru devotion. That’s right! Yoga actually means “unifying action of body, speech and mind”, it’s not just about body postures. Most importantly, a student or disciple should follow what was taught by a Guru as you said. Very well-done, keep up the good work!

      • Tantra Mashita says:

        Dear compassionate guru,

Thank you so much for your reply, actually you made me speechless, I knew all of these things by dint of you, before you I didn’t ever know what does devotion me, or even what does varjayana mean, I was lost, and don’t know where’s the right path, I was so attached to this mundane existence, I even did commitment 6 months commitment in order to see results and prosperity in my materialistic life, but after the end of this commitment, I discovered that all of these things are nothing and they’re not trustworthy, only the truth, the enlightenment and certainly the guru are precious, in fact I wish I could learn the vietnamese Yoga under your supervision certainly, but I decided to let the choice for you, maybe you see that it’s not suitable for me, and in this case you’ll be right undoubtedly

I bow my head down for you
        I devote myself to you

May you have a good health and live long for the benefit of all sentient beings
May all the sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature
May the pandemic caused by corona virus soon end
        Om Mani padame hum
