 Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh:

There are many Buddhists (laypeople or monks/nuns) who have not yet understood the process of self-motivation; they rely on external forms to affirm the “labels of enlightenment”; but where there is the shape, there is empty falseness, so I would like to share something about this

Firstly, we should understand what “cultivate” means? In Sino Vietnamese, “Cultivate” means “correct”. Confucius set out the moral process as follows: “self cultivation, family stability, ruling and bringing peace to people” (correct yourself, stabilize your family, then rule the country and bring peace to humanity). Later, the verb “self-cultivate” was religiousized the regulation that devotees need to follow their founder’s example. Then someone hears the word “cultivate”, they feel uncomfortable and they feel unpleasant with such cultivators. This happened because the churches, temples, pagodas caused the misunderstanding the true meaning of this word and closed the door of the original meaning of “cultivate”.

Lotus Flower Estrade

Buddhism is not a religion, so is Confucianism. Confucianism is a system to train the people’s qualities, cultivating human beings’ morality; So we should understand the word “cultivate” with the meaning “practice the method” like the teachings of Master Dharmakirti who pointed out one of five pedagogical arguments it goes: “know perfectly all methods to practice them.” Therefore, we can use the word “method” or “dharma path” (the subject is practiced in a certain method). The Buddha taught a great deal of paths to enlightenment and the symbolizing number is 84,000 paths, depending on the background of each person. In the Song Nguyen Tantra Housse, we have 6 methods revealed after having undergone the process of (1) research (2) survey (3) practice (4) application (5) results. All are based on the Buddha’s teachings, not on anyone’s own thought. Here is the list:

1/ Eight Dharma methods of taking refuge in the Three jewels (based on the teachings of Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava on “Dakini’s teachings”

2/ Uninterrupted offerings (based on the teachings on The Avataṃsaka Sūtra)

3/ Samayagdrsti-Prabha Samadhi (based on the teachings on the Sammàditthi sutta revealed on “Vimalakīrti’s room” on chanhtuduy.com)

4/ Lotus walking Dharani (based on the advice from Great Master Marpa Lotsawa)

5/ Meditation on Bodhicitta (Based on the teachings of the Lord Buddha to the king Pasenadi written on “the Excellent Path to enlightenment” by Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche)

6/ Five Degrees of Chenrezig meditation and Dharani (based on Tantric Giuyasamaza)

“Apart from three sessions of practice in holy space, the yogi practices Dharma uninterruptedly in daily life, like a non-stop flowing river. This is called mind purification that frees us from ignorance. Non-distraction means meditation!”

All the specific methods are based on the common teachings of the Buddha and the saints, Song Nguyen Tantra House’s methods are called Tantra Yoga according to the teachings of Marpa Lotsawa, the Guru of Milarepa who is known to become Buddha in one lifetime, revealed in his song: “Apart from three sessions of practice in holy space, the yogi practices Dharma uninterruptedly in daily life, like a non-stop flowing river. This is called mind purification that frees us from ignorance. Non-distraction means meditation!”

Now, we contemplate on the Buddha’s teaching, a great manifestation of the Dharma, as follows: “I teach you the path to liberation. Know that liberation itself depends on you” (Mahaparinibbana Sutta). From this point of view, we should be aware that following the Guru’s guidance on the path to enlightenment (Guru can be a lay Buddhist or a monk), knowing that enlightenment itself depends on you but no one. Here is the process:

1 / Self-cultivation: The path to the city of liberation has been pointed out by the Buddha, and guided by the Gurus, depending on their pedagogical knowledge, they set out their own paths but all are in common trajectory. If the learner practices nothing, he cannot know the liberation even he has learnt from the Guru for million years. So who can start the path to liberation without self-cultivation?

2 / Gradual cultivation: the tourist must have a guide. Likewise, the cultivators need the Teacher who teaches the Dharma and guides them on the path to liberation is called Guru. The process of travel is also arranged in advance and the tourist must travel in the same order as displayed in the list of where to go, what to do…In the same way as cultivation, Buddhists need teaching with the appropriate methods from the simple lesson to complex one. It is the process of gradual cultivation under the Guru’s guidance with appropriate methods to practice. A disciple getting the spiritual achievement itself depends on the role of the Guru with the following qualities:

1 /

Guru and his consor – Ms Mat Dieu received honour gifts from disciples

Know exactly all objects which require to be dismissed

2 / Know thoroughly many methods to abandon them

3 / Know exactly all objects which need practicing

4 / Know perfectly all methods to practice them

5 / Transmit knowledge to students with compassion

3 / Diligent cultivation: During this period the disciple diligently practices what the Guru has taught with his great effort, called “cultivate diligently” (the word “diligently” means make effort to focus on the essence of the doctrine without distraction). At this stage, the practitioner can get some achievement in meditation or visualization and share his experience by writing or making a speech, the practitioner is easy to fall into the state of the pride of self (asmimana), so-called “the hindrance to the enlightenment due to one’s own knowledge” (Jneyaavarna). It is the time when Guru and disciple have some disagreement, leading to conflicts and then the relationship between Guru and disciple will be broken. Guru’s fault is that Guru does not have ability to transfer the profound teachings, Guru neither has enough virtue nor enough power which comes from enlightenment to conquer his disciple. And Guru does not have the pedagogy to inspire the disciple. Therefore, the role of Vajrayana role of the Guru is the most important for disciple to make progress on the path to enlightenment, and the devotion to Guru is the leading factor in need to teach disciple so that the disciple make full attention to the process of diligent cultivation.

Among disciples, who dares to state that the Lord Buddha is unable to trust because of his self-cultivation?

4 / Self-cultivation: when making efforts to practice the dharma on the process of diligent cultivation with humility, Bodhichitta and especially with deep devotion to Guru according to the teachings of the great Master Asvagosha, the disciple will create the “foundation” to get success in the tantra path to enlightenment. Based on this foundation of enlightenment, the practitioner has ability to self-practice. This stage is completely different with the stage of the initial “self-cultivation” under the instruction from the Guru. At this stage, the disciple has mastered the practice and begins to apply flexibly many dharma means to attain the spiritual achievement through self-cultivation. Take a great example like the Lord Buddha who had experienced the process of “diligent cultivation”, then he left his Guru and practice self-cultivation in order to find the ultimate truth. Due to his self-cultivation to find the enlightenment, we today have a chance to follow the path to liberation from samsara. Among disciples, who dares to state that the Lord Buddha is unable to trust because of his self-cultivation?

Lotus Flower Estrade

Since we have the path to liberation to follow, we have a chance to practice the Dharma. The holy Gurus, monks all have made self-cultivation to get enlightenment. So there is a saying “only one who has meal gets full, only one who practices the dharma knows the liberation”. Take Milarepa for example, he made self-cultivation in the cave for 12 years and then he achieved the enlightenment. The state of enlightenment is the same but the background and the cause to practice on the path to liberation may be different. Because there are 16 items of emptiness to contemplate on for a practitioner to unify body, speech and mind and get the wisdom of emptiness. So, if no self-cultivation, how can the practitioner get the enlightenment?

Lotus Flower Estrade in Song Nguyen Tantra House

In the sutra of the last days of Buddha, the Lord Buddha taught that if a Buddhist could not find the spiritual teacher or Guru to learn from, it is the best way for him to see the percepts as the teacher, act in accordance with the teaching and rely on the scared text to affirm his achievement. The Lord Buddha’s teaching pointed out that it is self-cultivation which plays an important role in the fruits of the holy life. It is not the Buddhist (both lay Buddhist or monk) who composes some poems as a amateur or writes some books, builds some pagodas or makes some Buddha’s statutes but does not have the ability to practice self-cultivation. So, you should not think that only staying in pagodas or temples is the standard to become a Guru because there are many paths to enlightenment. The path of “pagodas” is only one among numerous paths, not the only one to liberation. Master Thich Thanh Nghiem said that in the Dharma Ending Age, if it is no chance to meet and learn from the holy Guru, the practitioners are able to follow the percepts and act in accordance with the teaching, scrutinize themselves continually in order to rid their faults of actions of body and speech whenever they appear and make effort to develop Bodhicitta; then gradually they will become the true teachers for themselves (a quoting from the book “Buddhist Studies”). Therefore, it should be objective to evaluate spiritual achievement by the intellectual work, the application of Bodhicitta, the spiritual effect and the service for all beings in order to improve the health of the body, speech and mind for the community through the dharma activities.

From the above points of reference, we should distinguish phenomena, practitioners’ behaviors in an objective way, in order to avoid causing bad karmas then get bad results according to the law of cause and effect that you have witnessed the real cases happening to the wrong-viewers who reap what they sow in the past. I pray that all sentient beings have humility and sense of shame.

Dear Guru thanks for sharing this article.

I understand know matter how many sutras we learn or how many hours we spend in pagodas or temple it would be of no use unless and until we put efforts from our inner heart and mind and practice in right method. Only our true efforts will help us to path of liberation.

May Guru live long and protected and get enlightened.

May all beings be free from suffering and get enlightened.

    Om Mani Padme Hum..

  2. Tantramikaya ( Jane) says:

Thank you, dear Holy Guru, for your article and the excellent explanations of Diligent Cultivation, Gradual Cultivation, and Self Cultivation processes. 1) Research 2) Survey 3) Practice 4) Application 5) Results. It is in our hands and in our independence to experience and practice all this. If we have a clear mind and are cultivated for the benefit of all then our karma will be positive. Our holy guru teaches us the Dharma teaching and teaches us the correct methodology. Our Holy Guru is our counselor and teacher on how to reach the path of enlightenment. We do not have to build temples or travel to distant places (I am traveling to see Buddhist temples and would like to receive that peace and security as experience) to go to Buddha’s path of enlightenment. But important is our inner attitude. Because Buddha is in us. If we read, practice, recite, pray and internalize your wise articles daily with dedication and trust, we will be successful. May our holy guru live long and happy for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature. Om Mani Padme Hum

Respected Guruji,I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

    I am Tantra Nirvadeva.

Just as a farmer ‘ cultivate his lands with hard labour shedding sweat even in the hot sun or  amidst  heavy rains to get bumper crops for his livelihood, so also,  a  devotee of Dharma should do ‘ cultivation ‘ in the Spiritual field to get Enlightenment !

Cultivation means in other words ‘ Dharma practices ‘.

There are 4 – methods of Cultivation :

    1. Self -Cultivation ——–Initial efforts by the devotee as per the instructions of Guru and Buddha’s teachings and holy Scriptures.

    2. Gradual Cultivation ———– It is the process of gradual cultivation under Guru’s guidance and monitoring with appropriate methods and practices. It depends on the role of the Guru who should have the following Qualities  stipulated by the great master Dharma Kirthi :

    1. He should know exactly all objects which need practice.

    2. He should know thoroughly all the methods to practice them.

    3. He should know thoroughly all objects which required to be dismissed.

    4. He should know thoroughly many methods to abandon them.

    5. He should transmit the knowledge to the students with compassion.

3.Diligent Cultivation ——– Here, the desciple diligently practice with efforts to focus on the essence of the doctrine with out distraction.

    4. SELF – CULTIVATION ———- This self-Cultivation differs from the initial first self-Cultivation. At this stage the desciple has mastered the practice. He leaves the Guru and continues self-Cultivation in order to find the ultimate truth ! as followed by the great Buddha !

Buddha advised if one could not get a holy scholarly Guru. Better to follow the Buddha’s teachings  and the holy Scriptures for cultivation.

It is self-Cultivation which plays an important role in the path of Liberation. !

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our beloved Guruji for upholding Dharma.

  6. Avinash Kumar Srivastava says:

    Revd. Holy Gurujee

    Charan sparsh

I was trying to read this paper for several daysbut because of domestic engagement particularly with my grand daughter could allow me to complete it many time I had to leave the half read paper. Only because of the mild but repeated reminder of my friend Rose Tran I could read it as it cultivated in me an urge to read it. I am thankfull to him who not only provided an occasion to read your paper but also cultivated an inclination in me to go through the Buddha’s teachings. In this way I consider him my Kalyanmitta.

Guurujee before I present my opinion on this wonderful paper  i would like to mention two things (I) It reminds me the Buddha’s Diolog in Kasi Bhardwaj Sutta where in he has equeted the holy path with the farmer’s cultivation of the land. Herein He has said that as the farmers in order to pre pare land to sow the seeds the farmers till the land throughly so that the seed donot get any obstruction in sprouting. Then the farmer waters the land after certain intervals, sothat seeds may get nutrition and water properly. then the farmer weeds out theunfavourale plants from the farm inorder tohelp the plants to grow properly. In the same way we do spiritual cultivation in the mind field of a yogavacar or a devotee and prepare him to understand the Dhamma and enable him to attain the summumbonum of life.

Secondly, when in course of development man enters from hunter age to tillage he cleared the jungles and made them suitable for stay and living purpose. then he started farming in order to fill his belly as he was fade up with the uncetenty of meals in hunting and wanted to have apermanent solution of food, habitat and liberate from the tiresome struggle of existance. Rgular  hezardus hunting had tired him. and there comes the age of cultivation. Here in the the normative behaviour, ethical codes and moral value cropped up. It is the age of cultivation that set up the rules and rgulation, norms for living peaceful and in harmony in society that have led the human society to the modern civilasation. since the track prepared by the Great Masters have lost in the blind race of mattarial achievments and the humanity has arrived at the brink of self destruction, the time has come to have a perusal of the teachings of the Master that will help the humanity not only to save our existance but also to sublimate the cosmic aswell as personal condition. In this conext the article is of great importance.

Buddha has provided a spirirtual dimension to this term cultivation wherein he has tried to spot light that before we start moving on the path of emanicipation we must inculcate certain values, virtues and decipline that may give a sublime dimentoin to mind and body civilize in behavour aned receptiv to the teachings leading to liberation, As normally farmer prepares the land to suit the seeds to sprout and grow.

Gurujee has divide the path of the spiritual cultivation in four parts I Self cultivation wherein the mental and physical fiel of the devotee is trained tobe receptive to the teaching and the Path. Self cultivation is the last stage also wher the devotee endevours for his emancipation himself without any guru as Buddha left his Gurujee Alar Kalam amd Udakk Ramputta and endavoure for His personal uplift. That is why He says you have to endevour yourself Tathagat is simpl to guied you.

The intermediary stages of Gradual culti vation and Diligent cultivation have a very important role in preparin the monks to understand the Dhamma  train the mind and uplift spiritually so that the devotee  may continue on the path of his own.

A very important thing has to be remembered that doing the superficial things will not lead any one to emancipation. In fact by practising  spiritual cultavation, particularly in Gradual or diligent stage the practisenor achives some super normal powers. One should get delued to it as these will lead the devotee astre and he will fall from the grace. Such type of people desplay miracle and very many things an leave the path. Guru Jee has asked catagorally not to glued to it and leave these as these are impdements of epiritual development. These things will give one the mindane name and fame but not the liberation from the bondage.

If a miracle happens, I wish to meet you in Vietnam, the beloved S-shaped country and we spend days and nights on the conversation about Buddhism.

    My greetings to Holy Guru,

As a i go on reading the article, i learned that having been heard some of the words of wisdoms doesn’t give any sense without having it manifested by your thoughts and actions. I can easily get relate into it because in the world that i am existing right now, many individuals who claimed theirselves as religious people but seldom you see the spirit of Godliness to them. Many praised only through their mouth but they proceed evil actions as they go all through their lives.

I am not in ashamed to admit that I’d grown to this kind of environment. Left and right, front and back, every morning of everyday. You see them on TV, on the street, neighborhood, and most of the time you have them in front on the meal table.  Neither i am ashamed to share that i was once a practitioner and been one among them. As my days get on towards maturity, I’d come to realized that listening isn’t enough, saying isn’t enough, knowing isn’t enough, but you have to make it happened to be functional and be granted.

I am not that much have knowledge yet about how Buddhism share its true wisdom in humanity, but i understand the deeper essence of it in making the existence of a human being to its worth. Through my friend who’d never been that busy for a thing just to share her time in letting me grasp what’s all about the knowledge of having a true wisdom, i can feel the deeper spirit that resides within me how it is being cultivated. I am looking forward to learn more and be guided more as my days of existence persist in this life.

Thank you to my friend, Thuy Nga, for always available of sharing great words of wisdom despite of her busy time.

    Dear guru

Thank you for this article.i am here say that depending only to guru is not true,we should have to cultivate ourselves.guru always says he guides us but traveling on the path is only done by us. It is not necessary to become a monk.we can practice it in our daily lives. It gives me satisfaction by Confucianism as – we first have to cultivate own, then taking care of family, then country and finally to humanity. But I have seen some in india- who ignores their parents and going to temples for God worship. This is totally sad and against huminity.so we have to see ourselves to correct then going to others. In past I had also a habbit to give free advice to others without commander of that situation. When I use to  see in past it gives me funny moments.

Thank you guru again for being with us .

May all sensient being attain true nature

    Holy Guru,

I bow my head before your lotus feet! Your teachings are like the much needed rain during a dry season and I happy to be one of your learners. This article is full of great information. After reading I have learned the 6 methods of practice according to Song Nguyen Tantra House which include:

    (1) Eight Dharma methods of taking refuge in the Three Jewels

    (2) Uninterrupted offerings

    (3) Samayagdrsti-Prabha Samadhi

    (4) Lotus walking Dharani

    (5) Meditation on Bodhicitta

    (6) Five Degrees of Chenrezig meditation and Dharani

I have also learned that Buddha taught that there were four methods of cultivation to reach the city of Liberation. These methods are:

    (1) Self-cultivation

    (2) Gradual cultivation

    (3) Diligent cultivation

    (4) Self-cultivation

This discourse also teaches that we, ourselves, must be willing to put into action these methods of practice and cultivation if we are to expect any results. Reading without practice is like betting on a blind horse to win the race. The odds will be forever against us to achieve liberation if we do not put in the work ourselves. Thank you great Guru for your ever shining wisdom and immeasurable compassion.

    Mat Dieu Hang,

Your translation gives a clear understanding or our Guru’s thoughts. May all of your legitimate wishes be granted within the right orbit of Dharma. I rejoice in your hard work and kindness. Thank you.

  25. Mật Chánh Tấn says:

    Dear holy Guru!
I have read this article. Through this article, I understand that learning and practicing Buddhism is the process of learning and correcting myself. Through the explanation of holy Guru, I now understand there are 4 specific stages in this self-correcting process. And it does not mean “doing it alone” as many people think.
In each stage, it is important and necessary to have guidance from the holy Guru. Because without the guidance of holy Guru, I will not know where to start, how to go step by step, what I need to watch-out for from Self-cultivation, Gradual-cultivation to Diligent-cultivation. Even before finding the path of liberation, the Buddha also needed to go through each initial stage until the stage of diligent-cultivation and then reach to the final stage. It is difficult for me to know and understand the teaching in sutra, not to mention application into life. Without instruction of holy Guru, I would not know about particular examples or substantiation for applying precepts in real life under 4 categories: Fixation, Flexibility, Observance and Violation in order to avoid failing into the attachment of words, abandoning the deep meaning inside. Thus, I know how lucky I am when having a great opportunity in this life to learn the right view under the guidance of holy Guru.
Thank you holy Guru for your teaching. May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.
